11.16 How a man in St Ives thwarted the nefarious actions of a thief

At this time a certain man who lived near the shrine of St Ivo the Persian was plagued by the furtive actions of a thief. This thief would take the milk that was brought to the man’s house each day. O thief! Have you not milk of your own? Are your stores not replete with yoghurt, cheeses, and cream? Yet you desire the milk of others! Study history and see the great men who, if we looked into it, we would see achieved so much without stealing even the smallest pot of crême fraîche. And so the man whose milk was stolen tricked this greedy agent of Satan. For, taking a pail of milk, he urinated in it and left it for the thief to take. After that the thefts ceased. Let that be a lesson to all who, in no way possessing the milk of human kindness, covet the dairy products of others.
