The end of times is daily announced, dearly beloved, in so many ways. There are signs and wonders from around the orb of the world, which I have told you about in my own writings, and the devil’s snares entrap more and more, week in and week out. Did not the blessed Cassian devote a whole book to the avoidance of each of the sins of wrath and vainglory, and yet as I just told you these demons entered and disrupted the council of the men of Handforth. At about the same time, in wondrous fashion, a demon appeared unto men who had assembled to determine a judgement. In the satrapy of the North Aremoricans which is called Texas a mallus or legal assembly was summoned to decide whether a certain person should be distrained of certain goods according to the law of those parts. As it happened, because of the ravages of the Plague, the mallus was held in virtual form using the Apparitio software of which I have spoken before. But behold, thanks to an unexpected wonder, one of the law-speakers who had been summoned appeared in the form of a cat. The judge or count who was presiding called attention to the fact that the man or, I should rather say, demon, had not appeared in the guise of a man but in its true form. At this the demon spoke saying that it was willing to proceed with the hearing but saying that it was not a cat. And indeed in this way, it spoke the truth, for it was not, it was a demon, but even this was trickery to confuse people, for the simple minded folk thought that it meant that it was a man! Thus the hearing proceeded, fooled by this deception. Afterwards the chroniclers of the land – O their sins – even asked the cat-demon for a comment, whereupon it replied that it was happy to cause laughter throughout the realm of the North Aremoricans. And of course it was, for have we not learned from the Fathers that levity of spirit creates an opportunity for Satan and his minions to enter the hearts of the pure? Let all beware the machinations of the demons!
