About us

Georgius Florentius Gregorius [Gregorius Turonensis] 19th Bishop of Tours. From the town of Clermont in the Auvergne, I, unworthy as I am, became bishop of Tours in circumstances that were entirely above-board and correct, and anyone who says otherwise has been listening to Felix of Nantes (see below). As well as curating the shrine of the most holy Saint Martin in Tours, I am a keen writer, known not least for my Ten Books of Histories, sometimes (wrongly!) called The History of the Franks (the name given to a later rip-off which left out all the best bits), which I began at Easter 576, regardless of what some say. You can read most of the Histories here. I wrote a number of other books of miracles and saints’ lives, all of which made my unworthy style very clear to all.

Agiulf, my deacon. An idle fellow who wishes only to travel the world and, if that is not possible, eat brioche and play computer games. A model supporter of the episcopate, replete with geographical knowledge and a mastery of the ways of the mysterious computing machines of our day. Also web-master of this site.

Monegund, a Holy Woman. A holy woman who moved to Tours from Chartres. Prey to new hobbies which recently include cooking with sprouts and parkour, with equally, if differently, disastrous results.

People we know

Felix, Bishop of Nantes. A garrulous and empty-headed fellow, prone to writing poison-pen letters to worthy folk as you may read here (in the 5th chapter of Book 5 of my Histories).

Riculf. A former deacon of mine, now working at Flunch in Nantes. Read about his foolish and sinful behaviour in the 49th chapter of book 5 of my Histories.

Salonius, Bishop of Embrun and Sagittarius, Bishop of Gap. The Beavis and Butthead of the Gallic episcopate. Read about them in chapter 20 of the fifth book of my Histories here. Lovable rogues in their own eyes; dangerous sociopaths in everyone else’s.

Venantius Fortunatus. A poet. A failed entertainer, Venantius is currently reduced to reading out poems after dinner at the local nunnery in Poitiers. Liable to turn up uninvited whenever food and drink is available.
