Prologue

A late medieval manuscript illumination showing Bishop Gregory of Tours speaking out against King Chilperic I of the Franks

Such times are these!

Many people have approached me, speaking to me in woeful words, saying ‘such times are these, o bishop, when there is no one who can explain current happenings to us poor folk, in terms we can understand. For the pages of the internet are many, some written by fools, others by demons and we know not where to turn for instruction. If only there were a site on the web which would set down the many events of the world in proper order and explain to us their meaning. Truly the arts of online political commentary are dead in the cities of Gaul.’ And indeed a great many things keep happening, some bad, some worse. Factions go on competing to control the governments of different realms, and the people choose the most unworthy and foolish of scoundrels as their leaders. The ambitious plans of men come to nothing but their vanity and greed know no bounds.
Meagre though my talent is, I have here set down in their mixed and confused fashion the doings of the powerful and of ordinary folk, and the many portents, signs and wonders through which the Lord makes His will known in the world.

These are the new books of my Histories, which I add to the Ten Books which I completed in the year 592 and which are available in good bookshops across the land.
